As of January 15, 2022, U.S. insurance companies and health plans are required to cover eight free over-the-counter, at-home COVID-19 tests per covered member per month.

As with so many other aspects of this pandemic, payers were forced to pivot and respond quickly. Now they must provide government-mandated coverage and track and forecast their finances to manage their businesses prudently.

In a recent poll of health plans, 64% of respondents said “Tracking of at-home COVID-19 tests” was their top data priority.

Two years later, the Whyzen Analytics team has developed a solution that allows health plans to stay on top of at-home test claims volume. They can then parse this data with other dimensions such as age, gender, number of comorbidities, etc. to better understand who is using the benefit and what the cost implications are in the coming months. For the first release of this capability, BHI is releasing a modeler for at-home test kits, shown below, so that employers or payers can model out what their liability will be under different usage and price assumptions.
