Steve Bandeian, MD, JD, Associate Vice-President, Analytics

As Area Vice President of Analytics at Blue Health Intelligence (BHI), Steve Bandeian, MD, JD, is responsible for analytics methodologies and for designing advanced analytics systems for Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Plans and other BHI clients. Dr. Bandeian has helped to develop analytics systems to assess provider performance and population health.  Other projects have included provider designation programs, consumer cost transparency measures for high-cost procedures, and development of an analytics system to automate identification of specific, actionable opportunities for cost savings.

Dr. Bandeian has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare analytics, healthcare cost management, and national health policy. Prior to BHI, he served as a senior scientist in the Office of the Director at the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), where he developed analytics systems to answer a broad range of questions relating to utilization, costs, and outcomes, and where he collaborated with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on the development of an episode of care groupers for Medicare. Prior to AHRQ, Dr. Bandeian led data warehousing and analytics teams at two large health insurance plans over an 11-year period, providing analytics support for the full-range of health plan operations. Among other achievements, he established and led a cost-containment committee that reduced medical costs by approximately 5%.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Bandeian served as a senior civil servant at the White House Office of Management and Budget, where he focused on Medicare budget initiatives and national healthcare reform. He also served on the professional staff of the Health Subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was responsible for Medicare policy and legislation related to physician payment, medical education, quality improvement, and fraud prevention.

Dr. Bandeian received MD, JD, and BA degrees from Harvard University. He is a board certified internist, and trained at the Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Bandeian practiced medicine in urgent care settings over a 25-year period earlier in his career.
